The Lithuanian women’s ice hockey national team gets with Bernd Haake a very famous head coach.
The 73-year-old German Bernd Haake is co-responsible for the „rebirth“ of Lithuanian ice hockey. In 2012 Haake took over as head coach not only the A team, but was also responsible as an assistant coach for the U20 and its development. In addition, he was in the national Lithuanian championship with series champion „Energija Elektrenai“ as an assistant coach. This gave him the opportunity to observe and recruit potential future national players. His biggest success was Lithuania in April 2018. This year, Lithuania succeeds as the host of the World Championship IIHF Div 2A in Kaunas, winning the group and rising to Div 1B. The two Lithuanian ice hockey legend Darius Kasparaitis and Playing President Dainius Zubrus were partly responsible.
Now Bernd Haake has a new job, as Head Coach of the newly launched Women’s National Team of Lithuania. Haake was offered this position, which quickly took on this challenge and was officially confirmed in office. „Last week, I got a call from Dainius Zubrus if I would enjoy taking over this job because I trained women in Spain as early as 1977. Three of the ladies currently preparing in Iserlohn are for the girls‘ team in my hometown – Bielefeld – set up, „said Haake.
The Lithuanian women’s team will thus take part in an official tournament for the first time this year: from 4th to 10th December they will participate in the Div III World Championship, which will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria.
