Kurbads and Liepaja continue to equip the squads with Ricards Birzins and Klavs Planics.
With the 25 year old Klavs Planics comes another forward to Liepaja. Planics comes as his teammate Maris Dilevka Gjovik from the Norwegian second division. The native Liepajaer comes from the youth of Metalurg Liepaja and played in the U18 and in Team II. In the 2012-13 season followed by a year at Zemale, but then returns back to Liepaja. After three seasons, Planics moved to Norway to “Moss Hockey” in the third division. After an outstanding season with 95 (!) Points (46G / 49A), he attracted attention and was committed by Gjovik. At Govik, he became a teammate of Maris Dilevka, reaching 44 points. After this season both return to their hometown.
HK Kurbads also became active on the transfer market, bringing a little “globetrotter” back home. The 30-year-old Ricards Birzins is said to bring his many years of experience on the defensive. Born in Riga, Birzins has already participated in two world championships with the Latvian U18 national team.
After that it got quiet around the defender, who spent some time with the Juniors of HK Riga and the Dinamo Riga Juniors in the Belorussian League. After a brief stint in Kazakhstan at Beibary’s Atyrau, Birzins returns to Latvia and joins Liepaja. After two seasons, a little world tour started. The second unloading station was Norway to the “Tonsberg Vikings”. Then he moved to Italy to Cortina. The following season spent the Defender in the ECHL at the Tulsa Oilers, where he also reached the play-offs. Then it went to the UK to “Manchester Storm” and for six games to Latvia to Prizma Riga.
The season 2016-17 he started at HK Mogo but then moved to France to Nice, and had to relegation. The next stop in Scotland was the “Fife Flyers”. It followed two good years where each of the playoffs were achieved. In these two years, Birzins achieves 30 (2017-18) and 20 (2018-19) points. Now routed Defender returns to Latvia and should stabilize the defense of Kurbads.
