The Toronto Marlies AHL team extend Defender Kristians Rubins for another year.
The 21-year-old defender was named Newfoundland Growlers in the ECHL’s “Kelly Cup Champion” 2018-19. That was reason enough for the organization of the Toronto Maple Leafs to equip the Latvians Kristians Rubins with another contract for the AHL at the Marlies.
Rubins came from the youth of his home team HS Prizma in Riga. Very early, in 2012 he went to Sweden to VIK Västeras to gain further experience in the U18 and U20. The following year he was allowed to play for the A team in Allsvenskan the first games (10). For the season 2016-17 Rubins moved to the US-Liga WHL to attract attention at the “Medicine Hat Tigers”.
In the meantime, Rubins also played in the Latvian U17, U18 and U20 national team. For the Latvia A team, RUbins was in action at the 2018 Top Divison World Championship in Denmark.
In the 2018-19 season, the farm team of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, the Toronto Marlies, brought in the AHL. Mainly he played in the ECHL at the Newfoundland Growlers. With this team Rubins reached the play-offs and finally he wins the “Kelly Cup”. In 56 games for the Growlers, he scored 18 points (1G / 16A).
