The goalkeeper of HK Riga, Arturs Silovs, was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the 6th round.
The long wait came to an end for Latvia. The last Latvian player was Rodrigo Abols, who was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks on # 184 in the seventh round of 2016. Arturs Silovs is the first Latvian goalie since Elvis Merzlikins, who was drafted in 2014 by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the # 3.
The 18-year-old was in the extended squad of KHL Team Dianmo Riga. His practice, however, he got in the MHL at HK Riga (92.0%), and in the Latvian league at HS Riga (91.8%). The Goalie talent was already called into the Latvian U16 national team, but came to no game. With the U18 he played in the World Cup of Div IA and attracted attention with a catching rate of 96.0%. Also last season Silovs was called up in the U18 national team and reached at the World Cup a respectable rate of 91.8%.
