In this year’s final of the Gagarin Cup, a new team will be added to the list of winners. Neither Avangard Omsk nor CSKA Moscow won the Cup in the 11-year history of the KHL. However Avangard was once in final, CSKA in two times.
Avangard Omsk lost to Dynamo Moscow in 2011-12 the series in the seventh game. The regular season finished Avangard in the Chernyshov Division first. In the conference quarter finals Omsk defeated Amur Khabarovsk with a “sweep” (4-0) and in conference semi-finals Metallurg Magitogorsk was sent on vacation with a 4-1 series. In the Conference finals, Traktor Chelyabinsk suffered the same and was also knocked out 4-1. In the Gagarin Cup final Omsk led against Dynamo Moscow already with 3-1. In game 7, a tactical home game, defeated by a goal by Klepsis 0-1 and lost the series still with 3-4.
In the current season Omsk reached the Divison second place behind Barys Astana. On the way to the finals last year’s winner AK Bars Kazan was eliminated in the Conference quarterfinals with a “sweep” (4-0). After that, Barys Kazan with a 4-1 score and in the East Conference final Salavat Yualef Ufa was defeated 4-2.
CSKA Moscow was in the season 2015-16 in the regular season the points strongest team. CSKA scored 127 (!) Points. On the way to the final, in the Conference quarterfinals Slovan Bratislava was eliminated with a sweep (4-0). In the semi-final, the army club defeated Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod 4-1 and in the Conference final SKA St. Petersburg was also adopted surprised with a sweep (4-0). In the final Metallurg Magnitogorsk waited. This series was only decided in the seventh game, CSKA lost this crucial home game with 1-3 and the series with 3-4.
In the previous season, 2017-18, CSKA was also in the final. The regular season was again ended as the winner of the Tarasov Division. On the way to the final was in the West Conference quarterfinals, city rivals Spartak was dealt a sweep (4-0). In the semi-final, the Finnish club, Jokerit Helsinki, was the opponent. This was thrown out of the competition with a 4-2. Once again the second Army Club, SKA St. Petersburg, was waiting in the Conference Final. In this series CSKA kept the upper hand and won 4-2. In the final round of the Gagarin Cup then AK Bars Kazan was the last stop. CSKA had to be defeated in five games with 1-4.
The regular season ended CSKA in the Tarasov Division as the first, and again as the point-strongest team (106) with only nine (!) defeats. The way to the final began with a sweep (4-0) over Vityaz Podolsk and the second capital club, Dynamo Moscow, was defeated 4-1 in the Conference semi-final. In the West Conference final, as in 2015-16, SKA St. Petersburg was the opponent. This series lasted a long time and CSKA was only able to prevail 3-1 in the seventh game, a home game, and win the series 4-3. Maybe it will now work for the CSKA in the third attempt to win the coveted trophy.
In the 2018-19 season CSKA won both games against Omsk. In the 11 year history of the Gagarin Cup, there have been 22 games between these two teams. Of these, CSKA won 15 and Omsk seven. Avangard’s last victory over CSKA was in October 2016 (2-1 in Moscow).
